Chocolutz Chip Cookies

Lee and I like to watch the various food channels.  Frequently at night, after we are in bed.  This means we see food we want when it is too late to get it.  It makes me hungry.  Recently I saw a show where they had chocolate chip cookies with potato chips.  I make a cookie with potato chips from the author Joanne Fluke.  But those chips are all crunched up into a salty powder.  The ones on the show just dumped a bunch of potato chips into the chocolate chip cookie dough.  This I gotta try.

I decided to start with a Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookie dough.  Did you know there are many of those?  I read the original and a few of the copy cat recipes and then I played around and this is the cookie I made for our newest guests.

While I was cooking, my daughter in England and I were texting via Viber. This allows me to make international texts for free.  I told her what I was making and we tried to think of a good name...double chips, salty sweet chocolate chip cookies, even Lay-go my chocolate chip cookies.  But I wasn't using Lays potato chips.  I used Utz and thus we have chocol-Utz chip cookies.

Chocolutz Chip Cookies

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 sticks (1 cup) cold butter
2 large eggs, room temperature
2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
11.5 oz. chocolate chips or about 1 1/2 cups
4 cups loosely packed potato chips

Pre heat the oven to 300°.  Mrs. Fields likes to cook her cookies low and slow.

I use a Kitchen Aid stand mixer.  Place the sugars in the bowl of the stand mixer and mix.  Add the cold butter and continue mixing.    If it is cold enough they will make a crumbly mixture.  It is warm and humid here and the beaters worked the butter into the sugar and made a dough.  Add the eggs and vanilla.  More mixing here.

You may put the dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk them.  I just them in the bowl and mixed away.  I did break up the flour into two parts, 1 1/2 cups and the salt and baking soda and powder, mix and then the last cup.

You don't want to over mix.  Just until everything is incorporated.  Add the chocolate chips and the full size potato chips.  Crunch away.  Don't mix until you can't see the potato chips.  Leave some flakes in to know they are there.

Use a 1 Tablespoon scoop and place a few inches apart .  I used a Silpat so they didn't stick.  Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until just starting to brown on the edges.  This is longer than most cookies.  remember it is only 300 ° and we are going for low and slow.

I only baked 2 dozen.  These are for our guests and of course I needed a few to let Lee taste them for product safety and quality control.

He liked them, but is having allergy issues, so I don't know if he could actually taste them, but they are cookies so they passed inspection.

The rest I froze for future use.  I want to be able to bake fresh cookies for our guests, but I don't want us to eat the rest in between.  So I will freeze some in dough balls to be baked fresh for guests.  Not as much fun for me, but my pants are getting tight.

Who are we kidding.  I am out of my skinny jeans and my not so skinny jeans are getting tight.  The things I do for a successful business.

  1. These sound so good. I'll have to try them. That combination of salty and sweet should be a good one.
