Snow in Fall

I have been trying to post these pictures of our recent snow storm.  For some reason I couldn't save or publish this blog. So now I'm trying again.  Here's hoping.

We had our first snow this season a little more than a week ago.  I no longer have horses and I don't work at the library any more.  This means I don't have to go to the barn to feed and I don't have to get in the car and drive.  So I'm content to stay inside and enjoy the snow.

Lee doesn't have that gene.  He thinks we need to get out in case of emergency.  A few years ago he bought a big truck and had a snowplow installed on it.  He likes to get in the heated cab and plow the drive.

To be fair, he does have to plow at least every four or five inches of snow.  If too much snow gets under the axle and then you don't have enough traction to plow.

Before he got the truck, he used the scraper or front loader on the tractor.  But the cab is not enclosed and it gets very cold and wet.  Our back drive is gravel and dirt and the snow plow can chew that up and then he has to regrade after the snow melted.  So he still uses the tractor for that.

While Lee works outside in the snow and cold, I get to step out on the front or back porch and enjoy the view.  Then I take a few pictures and take myself and my steaming cup of coffee back into the heated house.

We get some great views and the snow is beautiful.

This Is NOT 2 to 4 Inches

They said we would get another 2 to 4 inches.  Instead it snowed all day.  And we now have more than 10 inches of accumulation.

Lee scraped the driveway late yesterday, but then we had more snow overnight.  So out he went.  Poor guy.  At least it isn't as cold as it has been.

It is supposed to get up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit today.  I hope that means all the snow will melt.

Next week it is supposed to drop to 6.  SIX.  That is pretty cold.  At least for someone who grew up in California and spent years in  Hawaii.

At least it is a fair trade for the joy of seasons and the beauty of spring and fall.  She tells herself.  Over and over.

Snowing, AGAIN

Lee grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  When it first snows in the winter, the snow frequently stays in place until spring.  That is one of the reasons we don't live in the U.P.

That being said, it is snowing again.  And the snow from last week is still on the ground.

You can see a lump from the last snow storm along the front path.

Earlier this week we woke up to the lowest temperature since we have been here.  It was 7 degrees Fahrenheit on our screen porch.  The neighbor across the way said her thermometer showed 2 degrees.  Two.

Today it is much warmer.  Now it is 15 degrees although it was 12 when we got up.  So it is MUCH warmer.

I took some pictures but didn't step outside the house.  Too cold.

Can you imagine how cold it would be if we didn't have global warming?  Will you send some of that warming my way?

I'm Dreaming Of A White Thanksgiving

Our daughter and her fiancĂ© came here for Thanksgiving.  They left their home in Northern Virginia on Tuesday night to avoid the projected snow.  Good thing, because it did snow!

Not a lot, but enough to build a snow man.

And enough that RJ was really, REALLY happy.

And enough that Tara and Greg could do a bit of sledding.  Don't worry.  They didn't have to climb up that steep hill.  Lee picked them up in the Mule.

Greg tried to stand on the sled and ride it down the hill like a snowboard, but the sled did not cooperate.  Maybe he'll bring his actual snowboard at Christmas.

Then again, we have a ridge of rocks running along the bottom of the hill, so it will have opt be a LOT of snow.

The snow was gone in a few days, but the snowman lasted a lot longer.  Guess his Tech hat protected him from the heat.
